The Qur’anic Orthography

The Qur’anic orthography refers to the spellings, signs, and symbols used in the Quran but not in normal Arabic writing. The Elements of a Typical Qur’anic Page الرَّسْمُ العُثْمَانِيُّ (the Uthmanic text/codex) : This is the consonantry text without the short vowels nor dots that was prepared under the supervision of Uthman (R.A).  For example, the word خَلَقَ)- khalaqo)  is written as ﺣﻠٯ.  But the Arab Muslims were able to read these sticks because they actually knew the Qu’ran by heart and only used the written text as support. Note that الرَّسْمُ العُثْمَانِيُّ does not refer to a style of writing, but refers to the text as was prepared by the calligraphers of Uthmaan (R.A). Therefore, a text with a spelling like اﻟﺴﻤٰﻮٰﺕ, مائة conforms to الرَّسْمُ العُثْمَانِيُّ, while one with, مئة  السَّمَاوَات does not.  Scholars have permitted that one or two lines of a Qur’anic quotation in an article may be written in the normal Arabic script but not a whole chapter because the Arabic spelling varies from place to place. 2. الإِعْجَام: This is the addition of dots to the previously undotted letters for proper identification. This was necessitated by the entrance of the non-Arabs into Islam. A dotted letter such as خ ,ذ is called حَرْفٌ مُعْجَمٌ  while a dotless one such as ح, د is حَرْفٌ غَيْرُ مُعْجَمٍ 3. الضَّبْط: This refers to the  vowel...

The Arabic Parts of Speech

The Arabic parts of speech are three in number: Noun ( ٌاِسْم) Verb (ٌفِعْل) and Particle (ٌحَرْف) The pronouns, the relative pronouns, and the demonstrative pronouns are all known as ٌاِسْم in the Arabic language. A typical Arabic sentence may be formed by one or two or the three elements together. For example, the word قُمْ which means “stand up” (you) is a verb (ٌفِعْل) which singly forms an imperative sentence. In another example, الْمُدَرِّسُ جَالِسٌ which means the teacher is sitting) is a sentence formed from two words. Both the first and second words are nouns. The first word is called مُبْتَدَأ (subject) while the second word (the news) is called خَبَرٌ and they both formed a nominal sentence (جُمْلَةٌ اسْمِيَّةٌ ) In this third example: َكَتَبَ مُحَمَّدٌ الْقِصَّة (Muhammad wrote a story) the first word (كَتَبَ) is a verb while the second (مُحَمَّدٌ) is a noun and the third ( القَّصَّةُ) is also a noun. This type of sentence is called a verbal sentence ( جُمْلَةٌ فِعْلِيَّةٌ): the actor (فَاعِلٌ) is Muhammad while the object (مَفْعُول بِه) is the story. The Etiquettes of Eating in Islam

Allaah says in Q 59 v 7:…And whatever the Messenger has given you- take; and what he has forbidden you -refrain from…  The verse above is one of those that Allaah certified Prophet Muhammad for us as a role model in all spheres of life. Here is one of his teachings regarding eating: The hadith above enunciates three etiquettes of eating. These are: Mentioning the name of Allaah before eating. Eating with the right hand, and Eating from what is near especially when dining with others. This hadith also depicts the excellence of inculcating good manners into the children from early childhood as the narrator explicitly stated in another narration that he was a boy at that time and eventually grew up with those manners especially that of eating from what is near! ‘Umar bin Abu Salamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and my hand would wander about in the dish. Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me “Mention Allah’s Name (i.e., say Bismillah before you start eating), eat with your right hand and eat from what is near to you”. I always followed this way of eating after this incident. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Riyadhus-Saliheen Book 1, Hadith 299 Therefore, every Muslim, parent, and guardian should strive towards implementing and inculcating the teachings of...

The ARaBiC Pronouns

The Easy Arabic Pronouns Usage in Self Introduction Pronouns are words used instead of nouns and are used the same way in both the Arabic and the English Languages. For example, in introducing my self, I would say ” ُاِسْمِي سَوْدَة” which mean “my name is Saodat”. Then in a second sentence, I will mention my profession by saying  “أَنَا مُدرِّسَةٌ”  ( “I am a female teacher”). In this second sentence, I have used the pronoun “أَنَا” which means “I” to represent Saodat. Other pronouns such as you, she and he are written as أَنْتَ,أَنْت), هِي َ, هُوَ) respectively. These pronouns, unlike the possessive pronouns, are used to represent nouns and not attached to them to indicate the possessors. أَنَا, أَنْتَ,أَنْت, هِي َ, هُوَ are used in sentences as shown below: Saodat AlimiSaodat Alimi holds an ijaaza in Qur’an Memorization, a higher diploma in Arabic and Islamic studies and a Bachelor degree in Chemistry education.
